Scene 2 – the Encounter (excerpt)

Teenage Arthur is heartbroken over the loss of his beloved dog, Mischka. Furious with his parent’s attempt to sugarcoat her death, Arthur runs away into the forest.

Whispers

Arthur
(enters with false bravado)

(triumphantly)

(plaintively)

Mischka... Mischka
Running through the trees

Blood shitting hell!
I’m fourteen!
I’m fourteen!

Not a baby
Not afraid
And certainly not of a
Dumb dead dog!

See! I can say it! I can say the word!
Dead! Dead!

DEAD

Dead?

Arthur sits forlornly and lays his backpack to one side.

Arthur
(sorrowfully)

(standing up and pacing bitterly)

Mischka... Mischka
My forever friend
My gentle wild companion
Whose eyes forgive me anything
Who sees me as I really am
Are you truly running
Through the trees forever
Never to appear again
And press your nose
Into my open hand?

This is all so unfair
So unfair

So much more than I can...

Arthur turns and sees a bear cub rustling through his open backpack. Both boy and bear cub freeze in shock.
