Scene 3 – the Search

Callie and Diana are in the forest looking for Arthur. Callie carries a rifle. Diana reminisces about their love, while Callie voices her struggle to cope with Arthur growing up.

Diana

Arthur!

Arthur, darling!

Arthur? Arthur!

Did you have to bring the gun?
It makes me nervous

Oh sure, go ahead and ask
The wildlife not to eat us

These were our woods once, remember
You and I would walk in them for hours
Dark shadows between trees
Revealing feelings and more

And then with Arthur as a child
He’d run on ahead and then
Run out of steam and we would
Carry him upon our shoulders

Not that we can carry him now

Callie

Not that he’d want to be carried

Diana sighs and moves to put her hand on Callie, who brushes her off.

Callie

Whatever we try, it’s never enough

Diana persists with empathy.

Callie

Darling, he’s a teenager learning
To fit into his skin
These things take time

Maybe we should have let him say goodbye

I fall apart when I see him cry
The anger is somehow easier

I know he’s changing
Must we change too?

Lights dim.
